there with the the snow blowers and shovels clearing it for the guests. but a lot of the city sidewalks have not been touched. a couple right here behind me walking in the street. the streets have become the sidewalks. obviously people who have pets have to come outside to let their pets do what they need to do. and the street's the best place to do it. we are starting to see some traffic. and i believe that's interstate 95 over here to my left. i am seeing cars and trucks passing down through the interstate. but keep in mind that it's going to be awhile. i don't know if governor chaffey is going to open the roadways back up today. again the priority is to get the roadways cleared. it's going to be tougher for crews to do that if people decide let's go out and take a look and see how bad things are. they want you to stay home. give them a day. and then maybe tomorrow things are going to be a little bit better. >> stay home. watch it on tv. you can get out perhaps better tomorrow. ron mott thanks for the report. >>> let's go to another area buried under deep snow. that's connecticut. we have nbc's ron

on edge yesterday l.a. police detectives mistakenly shot a 71-year-old woman in the city ovator answer right outside of l.a.. believing she may have been that armed gunman. the woman was delivering newspapers with that daughter. police mistook their truck for his truck and the 71-year-old woman was shot twice in the back. dorner posted a manifesto about what he is doing explaning why he shooting rampage. you can find out his explanation on our channel 2 website ktvu.com. >>> happening right now it is already snowing on the east coast as a dangerous and monsterrous storm moves into the region. we want to take you live to time square where you can see it is wet. we understand it is very cold out there. two to three feet of snow expected in several states back east. emergency management teams are preparing for the worst. especially in areas still recovering from super storm sandy. many schools in massachusetts have canceled classes teat. people are usualed to take the day off. the big storm causing major problems at airports. more than 3,000 flights have been canceled today. cara liu is a

york city to boston. that includes providence and hartford. could experience 18 to 24 inches plus of snow over the next 24 hours. areas in pink, most of new york, that's a winter storm warning. and locally we're dealing with this winter weather advisory and overnight the weather service included howard county and montgomery county, and loudoun county under a weather advisory until 11:00 this morning. there's your forecast. clouds by 5:00 p.m. though the winds will pick up. that will be another story. gusting to 40 miles per hour later tonight as the storm cranks up. more details coming up in a few minutes. let's do traffic and julie wright has your latest on the roads. >> on the southbound side of i- 95 we're finding wet pavement with rain. this is where i have not one, but two separate accidents. southbound i-95 after lorton before route one. two left lanes tied up at the scene. delays are building heading southbound. a lot of cones. vdot on the scene with a roll back, tying up the two left lanes southbound. second crash occurred closer to route one. the two right lanes blocked.

incredible stuff. the hardest forecast is the new york city because the temperatures are kind of borderline. it may start as snow, go over to rain, a little sleet and back over to snow late. that's why the snow totals for new york, i have them down to six to ten inches. if it's all snow, it could be as much as 14 inches in new york city. that's the big question mark. hartford's going to get nailed, also all the way to southern portions of new hampshire and portland, maine. i mentioned temperatures. notice it's 38 in philly, 34 in baltimore. that's why southwards i don't think you'll get much out of this at all. that's why d.c.'s not getting snow. look how cold it is in the new england area. this is how it plays out. again, the bottom line, the worst of the storm arrives after noon today. so if you're in northern jersey, new york city area, long island, connecticut, hudson valley all the way through eastern mass and rhode island, do not be on the roads after noon today. that's the most important message everyone needs to know because if you do that and you get stuck on the roads, it's going

and west of the city and new england that's where we are going to get a snow event. what are we talking? two storm system as system to the north and a big system across the gulf they are going to come together and merge and bring us that nor' easter. friday overnight into saturday is where we will see the worst conditions. see the snow line the pink tlooins why we are not really entirely sure of the snow totals in new york. for boston and portland interior sections easily 6 to 12 in some cases 2 feet of snow. it could be a blockbuster. here's the breakdown. mid atlantic rain and wind is deepening coastal low as we head into friday and saturday. blizzard conditions for eastern new england. we have blizzard watches in effect where we could see winds 60 miles an hour. there are your winter watches and storm advisories for much of new york up towards maine. this is a big event. we will bring you the latest. if you are traveling tomorrow you need to pay close attention. a lot of folks could stay home. >> i heard epic and blockbuster. >> epic and blockbuster not afraid to use those terms with

for connecticut and massachusetts. a little less for new york city. widespread 6 to 10 over northern new england. the european computer which has been on this storm has been pinpointing it all along. much higher with the snowfall totals. again, upwards of 20 inches, even new york city possibly 11 inches. here's my forecast for the storm. this is my first estimate. i'll tweak this as needed. new york city, four to eight. here is that one to two foot line anywhere in eastern mass. there is going to be to be somewhere there will be banding and lightning and thunder during snowfall. again, we could see two feet in some spots. it's going to be a rough friday night and saturday morning. >> thank you, bill. >>> the ten most disliked athletes in america. >>> an outrage over some are calling a racist frat party at duke university. >>> plus, the thrill of victory. and the agony of racing up 1576 steps of the empire state building. of the mill shootings that ravage cities every day. gun violence is gun violence. hideya pendleton was a high school student. she played volleyball. she performed with her school's marching band at president obama's marching band last month. that was january 21st. on january 29th, she and friends caught cover because of rain. it was only a mile from barack and michelle's home in chicago. a person with a gun approached the group and started shooting. hideya pendleton was not the shooter's target, however. on saturday in chicago, there will be a funeral service for hideya pendleton. the white house let it be known to be that first lady michelle obama will be at the funeral, which will make this even more of a national scale tragedy than it already is. city. rick reichmuth is outside our studio in manhattan and anna in central park. rick, let's start with you. >> ana or me. >> anna, she's better looking. >> no question. >> guys, are we going to anna first? >> okay, good morning to you guys. we're in central park right now in midtown manhattan. it's gorgeous, there's 8 inches of snow on the ground. it looks a little bit higher as i go through here. the snow is falling in long island and the new england states. connecticut has gotten 3 feet of snow and we're hearing boston got clobbered with 2 feet and still falling. there are only a handful of deaths. we heard only of one but allison, you're mentioning four. it appears people learned lessens following superstorm sandy and heeding the warnings. traffic bans were in place. police in new york mentioned there were hundreds of cars stuck on the long island expressway. people really thinking back to the blizzard of '78 when the last travel plan was in place in boston. residents have been getting hit hard and they're trying to keep up with the snowfall. let's take a listen. >> this is the

it in perspective, we are just getting going here. this storm just starting to wind up. in cities like boston, dealing with a slushy mess and snow right now. maine heavy snow for you. new york, just starting to turn over to snow but by the evening rush around 5:00 p.m. really going to get blasted there in new york city. heavy snow expected tonight. could pick up another eight inches to a foot and the word of caution today is get out early, get off the roads. many governors wanting you to do that very thing. here's a look at tomorrow then. still dealing with blizzard-like conditions in the cities including boston. this is a long duration of that and that's a problem with this system. storm:con for boston is a 10. that's the highest level here at the weather channel. you need caution with this. seeing the blizzard-like conditions, additional 12 to 18 inches tonight. the winds ferocious. also gusting up to 60 miles per hour so we'll see blowing, whiteout conditions in massachusetts tonight in to through tomorrow, as well. where we pick up another five to eight inches so blizzard-like conditions

to a pipe in his basement. kansas city police responsing to a chip from the missouri children's hotline found a 17-year-old boy locked up, appearing frail and hungry. the special needs teen told police he had been locked down there by his parents since september. according to a neighbor, the mother had been telling people that the boy had been out of town. after witnessing prior abuse, neighbors expected something was wrong. >> there were a couple times i came over here after school and he was sleeping on her front porch because they wouldn't let him in the house. it was sad. we cried a lot yesterday. >> three adults are in custody. the boy is in the care of the state now. >>> the boy scouts organization says it needs more time on whether to lift its ban on day troop and scout leaders. they were expected to vote on that proposal yesterday to allow local scout groups to make their own policies, but a decision was put off until the annual meeting in may. the scouts said it was due to the complexity of the issue. >> that will only ramp up the controversy surrounding the issue. >>> a baseba

part of that storm but it's going to be historic from new england and new york city and boston. that is the brunt of it. locally? and let me start with radar. we're watching two systems that will be one big storm off of the east coast and too far north. we will get a bit of rain later tonight and as that precipitation pushes north, it might be cold enough in some areas to begin as a mix of sleet, snow, or freezeing rain and as that happens, 11, 12:00, might be later than that, we have advisories going into affect in this area. the blizzard warnings in log island, massachusetts, connecticut, rhode island and that is going to be a terrible and big story there and they rushing to get provisions and to prepare for power outages. we'll get the light wintery mix and frederick county, many points north and west from there and that i have the winter weather advisory and this is not a huge problem for us and i think as this winds do you, it could end up with -- winds down, it could end up with an accumulation. and there is lot to keep track of and we'll keep everything here in a bit. >>

storm in the boston area. where temperatures are hovering just below freezing. in new york city, it's 32 degrees right now. and even though we will see some light snow in the new york city area at some point this morning, it will change over to rain and most of the accumulating snow in new york itself will occur overnight. you can see blizzard warnings post the from boston right back into hartford, connecticut, and across long island as well. eastern long island is an area we could end up with 12 to 18 inches of snow. boston is the jackpot. and it is certainly not out of the question to pick up 24 to 30 inches of snow. the only saving grace is that it's friday and this is occurring over the weekend. so not as many people on the roads. >> a little bit of good news. we'll check back in with you later. >>> turning to california where a massive manhunt has the los angeles area on virtual lockdown. lapd putting extra security at their headquarters because the suspect used to be one of their own. disfor dornor is wanted in multiple shootings across southern california. the 33-year-old says he'
